1. The Committee met at 11.30 a.m.


2. Members Present.


The following members were present:—


Deputy Patrick Hogan (in the Chair), Deputies Barrett, Briscoe, R. Burke, E. Collins, FitzGerald, H. Gibbons, Keating, MacSharry, Nolan and Tunney.


A message was received from Deputy Treacy regretting his inability to be present owing to an indisposition.


3. Mr. E. F. Suttle (Comptroller and Auditor General) was in attendance in an advisory capacity.


4. Ordered: to grant an application received from RTE and the Press to photograph the Committee before the commencement of proceedings in public.


5. Ordered: that, during examination of witnesses, Members sit in alphabetical order of names from the left of the Chairman and put questions in that order.


6. Noted: minute* of 22 Nollaig 1970 from the Clerk of the Seanad stating that the Committee on Procedure and Privileges had decided with regret that the Seanad Chamber and ancillary accommodation sought could not be made available to the Committee.


7. Ordered: that evidence may be taken in private where national security matters are concerned, where publication of evidence would be prejudicial to further inquiries, and where witnesses from outside the jurisdiction could be put at risk if their identity could be established from their evidence.


8. The Committee deliberated.


9. Sitting suspended.


The sitting was suspended at 1.35 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. today.


10. The Committee met again at 2.30 p.m.


11. The Committee went into public session.


12. Witnesses examined.


Mr. C. H. Murray, Secretary, Department of Finance, was sworn and examined, (accompanied by Mr. A. J. Fagan).


13. Sitting suspended.


The sitting was suspended at 4.40 p.m. until 5.15 p.m. today.


14. The Committee met again at 5.15 p.m.


15. The Committee went into public session.


16. Witnesses examined.


Examination of Mr. C. H. Murray was resumed.


17. Mr. C. H. Murray withdrew.


18. The Committee went into private session.


19. Ordered: that Mr. A. J. Fagan, Department of Finance, and Mr. H. T. Deacon, Mr. W. C. Walsh and Mr. T. D. Moore, Munster and Leinster Bank be required to attend before the Committee and to send documents and that they be invited to send preliminary statements.


20. Adjournment.


The Committee adjourned at 7.35 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday next.
