APPENDIX VI.

CIVIL SERVICE ARBITRATION BOARD.

An Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

During my examination before the Committee of Public Accounts on 1 March, 1962, I undertook to furnish a note concerning the operation of the Civil Service Arbitration Board.

Expenditure in 1960-61 under subhead H.1 of the Vote for the Office of the Minister for Finance consisted entirely of fees paid to the Chairman of the Board which were related to the number of sittings. The Board deals only with claims which have not been settled at the appropriate conciliation council and it is difficult to estimate with any precision how many cases will come for hearing in any given period. Particulars of the estimate for and expenditure on fees in recent years are as follows:

Year

Estimate for fees

Expenditure on fees

£

£

1957-8

1,000

189

1958-9

650

189

1959-60

158

1960-61

504

The number of claims awaiting hearing at the end of 1960-61 was three. All claims submitted for arbitration up to the middle of September, 1961, including these three together with seven others which were sent forward in the interval, were heard before the end of that month.
