Committee Reports::Report - Appropriation Accounts 1955 - 1956::19 February, 1958::Appendix

APPENDIX XII.

DEFENCE—SAVING ON SUBHEAD R.

Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

At the proceedings of the Committee of Public Accounts on the 11th July, 1957, I undertook to furnish a note regarding the saving of £1,241 on fuel oil under Subhead “R” of the Vote for Defence in 1955/56.

In 1954/55 the oil operated heating plant at Collins Barracks, Cork, was not in full operation as one block remained unconnected; solid fuel was used for heating this block. When the Estimates for 1955/56 were prepared it was anticipated that this block would be connected to the heating plant. Accordingly, the Estimates for that year made provision for increased quantities of oil. The block was in fact connected to the heating plant in 1955/56, but, owing to the Suez Canal crisis, sufficient quantities of oil could not be obtained and heating by means of solid fuel had to be reverted to for the time being.
