APPENDIX XXIV.DELAY IN DELIVERY OF A TRACTOR FOR USE ON LAND PROJECT WORK.Clerk, Committee of Public Accounts. With reference to the inquiry of the Public Accounts Committee on the 4th September regarding the tractor referred to in paragraph 33 of the Comptroller and Auditor General’s Report on the Appropriation Accounts for 1950/51, I write to state that this tractor, for which £2,170 was paid in February, 1950, was replaced on 12th March, 1952. The price of this machine had meantime increased to £3,820 but notwithstanding this very substantial increase no additional charge was made by the suppliers. In effect, therefore, the transaction was in the best public interest as it enabled a machine, which the Department was not in a position to put into immediate use, to be employed on reclamation by the contractor, and in addition the Department secured replacement of the machine when they needed it, at a considerable saving.
