APPENDIX XXIII.

QUESTION OF THE PRESENTATION TO THE DÁIL OF THE ACCOUNTS OF THE POTATO MARKETING COMPANY.

Clerk,

Committee of Public Accounts.

As promised at the meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on 4th September, I have looked into the question of the presentation to the Dáil of the audited accounts of the Potato Marketing Company which arose on a discussion of paragraph 27 of the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report on the Appropriation Accounts for the year 1950/51.

The position is that the Company is registered under the Companies Acts. It is one limited by guarantee and not having any share capital. The certificate of incorporation is dated the 16th February, 1950. It is under no obligation to publish its accounts except to its members. The Directors of the Company number ten, two of whom are officers of the Minister. The Company is non-profit-making and its Directors are unpaid. It would be a matter entirely within the discretion of the Directors to decide to whom to make the accounts of the Company available.

The Company receives no moneys from public funds and, so far as the bodies operating under the aegis of this Department are concerned, it is not the practice to publish the accounts of companies operating in such circumstances as those applying to the Potato Marketing Company.
