Sub-Committee on Alcohol Misuse by Young People

Minutes of 22 January 2004

1.The Joint Committee met in public session in Committee Room R4, Leinster House 2000 at 12. 06 p.m.


2.Attendance


The following Members were present:


Deputies Batt O'Keeffe(in the chair), Jerry Cowley and Fiona O'Malley.


Senator Frank Feighan.


Apologies were received from Senator Mary Henry.

3.Minutes of the meeting of 17th December.


The minutes of the meeting held on 17th December were agreed.

5.Presentation by Mr. Padraic Naughton, Chief Executive Officer; Fr. Mícheal Mac Gréil, S.J.; Chairman and Mr. Sean Coll, President, Pioneer Total Abstinence Movement, on the role of the Pioneer Movement in combating alcohol misuse by young people.


The Chairman welcomed the following witnesses to the meeting:


Mr. Padraig Naughton, Chief Executive Officer;


Fr. Mícheal Mac Gréil, S.J., Chairman and


Mr. Sean Coll, President of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Movement.


Mr. Coll began the presentation by outlining the philosophy of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Movement and Mr. Naughton and Fr. MacGréil explained how the Movement could assist in combating alcohol misuse by young people.


A questions and answers session then ensued.


The Chairman thanked the witnesses for coming and outlining the valuable role of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Movement in showing young people that there is an alternative to alcohol. He also stated that the presentation would inform the future deliberations by the Sub-Committee on the subject.
