OFFICE OF THE REVENUE COMMISSIONERS.

Appropriation Account 1988.


1. Advise Committee, in due course, of the outcome of the action taken in the case of the C. & E. Officer suspended in connection with the irregular importation of cars (paragraph 24 of the 1987 Report).


This matter is still sub judice.


2. Inform Committee of any progress made in dealing with unmatched PRSI records in the Department of Social Welfare.


Arrangements have now been made, with effect from 6 April, 1991, for the transfer of the responsibility for allocating RSI numbers from the Revenue Commissioners to the Department of Social Welfare. The main objective here is to prevent the allocation of multiple RSI numbers to an individual and to ensure that all individuals are allocated an RSI number.


The Revenue Commissioners will continue to seek ways in which their computer-based support for the task of reducing the numbers of unmatched records can be improved.


The Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Welfare are cooperating continually with a view to improving the situation.


3. Send a note to the Committee on the question of the poundage and the interest Sheriffs receive by retaining amounts prior to forwarding them to the Collector General.


Apart from the normal details of earnings required to be supplied on Income Tax returns, which of necessity receive the same degree of confidentiality as returns from all other taxpayers, Revenue does not receive or require to receive any other details of Sheriffs earnings.


A rough estimate of the total earnings of all 16 Sheriffs in 1990 would be as follows:—
