At the meeting of the Committee of Public Accounts, on 6 November, 1986, the Accounting Officer agreed to supply information on the consultancy firms employed in 1984.

Public Relations and Consultancy Fees

512. Mr. V. Brady asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the total amount paid by his Department for the year 1984 in respect of public relations and consultancy fees, indicating the name of the public relations or consultancy company to which such fees were paid.

Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism (Mr. J. Bruton): A total of £323,359 was spent by my Department in 1984 on consultancy fees; there was no expenditure in respect of public relations consultants.

The amount of £323,359 was expended on a variety of projects, undertaken by the following consultants.

Mr. Wallace asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give details of the expenditure of £500,000 on consultancy services in 1985; the name of the consultants employed; the number of consultants; the way in which they were recruited; and the number of tenders received for this work.

Minister for Industry and Commerce (Mr. Noonan, Limerick East): In 1985 a total of £535,282 was expended by my Department on consultancy services, details of which are as follows:

Most of the work was carried out by firms or other bodies for which details of the number of people employed on each assignment is not readily available.

Individuals or firms engaged in consultancy work are selected on the basis of suitability and proven experience. The number of submission invited would vary from case to case and the total number received is not readily available.
