Committee Reports::Report No. 11 - Disturbance at Fort Mitchel prison, Spike Island on the 1st September 1985::13 August, 1986::Appendix

Letter dated 14th November, 1985 from the Clerk to the Committee to the Private Secretary, Garda Commissioner.

APPENDIX M

14 November, 1985.

Dear Private Secretary,

The Committee, at its meeting on 12th November, considered correspondence which it received from the Garda Representative Association about the disturbances on Spike Island on 1 September last.

The Committee directed that I write to you, enclosing a copy of the correspondence from the Garda Representative Association, and request the Commissioner’s observations on the various matters raised by the Association in their correspondence.

The Committee expressed grave concern with the contents of the correspondence which, if it correctly states the position, reflects a very serious and disturbing situation.

The Committee, which will consider this matter again at its next meeting to be held on 26th November, has requested a response prior to that meeting. The Committee further stated that in the absence of any detailed response it will have to accept that the position outlined by the Garda Representative Association represents the situation on the Island.

I would appreciate hearing from you before the next meeting of the Committee.

Yours faithfully,
