Dear Private Secretary,

I refer to your letter of 19th September 1985 about the recent disturbances at Fort Mitchel Prison, Spike Island.

Your letter, together with other correspondence in connection with that disturbance, was considered at the Committee’s meetings on 25th September and 8th October.

The Committee expressed concern for the safety of all persons on the Island. The Committee directed that I write to you to enquire as to the contingency plans which were available as of the date of the riot for dealing with an emergency situation. The Committee is also interested to establish present plans and arrangements to protect people on the Island in the event of a further disturbance.
