Dear Private Secretary, The Committee, at its meeting on 10th September, discussed the disturbances which took place at Fort Mitchel Prison, Spike Island, on 1 September 1985. The Committee decided to request the Minister for Justice to furnish a full report in relation to the events which took place on that date. The Committee also decided to request a statement in relation to (i)the operation of the prison, (ii)the selection procedures, (iii)any contingency plans to deal with an emergency situation, and (iv)an estimate of refurbishing the prison to provide custodial accommodation. The Committee further decided to request the Minister to send an official or officials from his Department, together with the Governor of the Prison, to attend at its next meeting to discuss this matter. In addition to requesting information from the Minister for Justice, the Committee also decided to request the Commissioner to furnish any information which he may be in a position to supply to the Committee in relation to the events surrounding the disturbances at Fort Mitchel Prison on 1 September 1985. This topic will be considered at the next meeting of the Committee to be held on Wednesday, 25th September 1985. I would appreciate hearing from you on or before 20th September. The Committee also decided to seek information from the Prison Officers’ Association.
