APPENDIX 20

THE RESTORATION OF GRANGE ABBEY

9 December, 1982

Secretary,

Committee of Public Accounts,

Leinster House,

Dublin 2.

A Chara,

In the course of my examination by the Committee on 4th November, 1982, I undertook to supply the Committee with a note in relation to Grange Abbey, Raheny, Co. Dublin. The position is as follows.

The Commissioners of Public Works have no plans for the restoration of Grange Abbey. This small medieval parish church has some interesting historic associations but little of architectural merit remains. As a result of housing development in this area, it has suffered increasingly from vandalism. The Commissioners are co-operating with the County Council to ensure its preservation and it is hoped that it will eventually be maintained by the County Council in conjunction with the area of open space of which it forms the centre piece.

Mise, le meas,

Accounting Officer

Office of Public Works.
