APPENDIX 19

OCCUPATION OF FLOORS 1-4 OF BLOCK 1 OF THE IRISH LIFE DEVELOPMENT.

18th January, 1983

Secretary,

Public Accounts Committee.

Dear Mr. Browne,

I promised the Chairman of the out-going Committee to let him have a note about a point raised under Paragraph 19 of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General, Subhead F3 of this Office’s Vote for 1979 in relation to the occupation of floors 1-4 of Block 1 of the Irish Life Development, Abbey Street, Dublin.

Briefly, on resolution of the protracted postal dispute of 1979, work on the telephone installation for the accommodation commenced in November, 1979 and following completion of some of the work, the first group of staff took up occupation in February 1980.

On completion of the telephone installation, the transfer process re-commenced. This was necessarily an on-going arrangement, as close to three hundred staff were involved. An industrial dispute in the Furniture Branch of this Office held up the movement of staff for several weeks. However, by 25th July, 1980, the accommodation was to all intents and purposes fully occupied. Final small groups of staff moved in during September and November 1980.

Yours sincerely,

P. SCANLAN,

Accounting Officer

Office of Public Works.
