HOUSES OF THE OIREACHTAS—EXPENDITURE ON REMUNERATION OF OFFICERS AND STAFF

During the proceedings of the Committee on 9 March, 1978, I undertook to submit a note explaining the increase in expenditure under Subhead E (Salaries, Wages, and Allowances of Officers and Staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas) in the year 1975 over the nine-month period 1 April—31 December, 1974.

Expenditure in 1975 amounted to £495,200 approximately, and in the nine—month period of 1974 it amounted to £271,500 approximately—an increase of £223,700. When the nine-month period of 1974 is converted to a period of 1 year the increase is £133,200 approximately or on a percentage basis about 37%. These figures are arrived at as follows:—

Expenditure for 1974 converted to 1 year, £271,500 × 4/3	=	£362,000
Expenditure for 1975	=	£495,200
Increase	=	£133,200
Percentage Increase,133,200 × 100/362,000	=	37%
The breakdown of the figure of £133,200 is as follows:—
Pay increases as a result of National Pay Agreements	=	£90,000
Extra Staff (10 additional posts)	=	£22,000
Normal Incremental Progression of Staff	=	£10,000
Miscellaneous (Increases in Overtime Payments, Increases in Employers’ Social Welfare Contributions, “Equal Pay” Adjustments, Increases in Children’s Allowances, Increases in Allowances in the nature of Pay following National Pay Agreements, Increases in Salary Scales as a result of “Grade Claims” conceded)		£11,200
Total	=	£133,200
