APPENDIX 10

HOUSES OF THE OIREACHTAS—OFFICE EQUIPMENT

7th April, 1978.

Clerk,

Committee of Public Accounts.

This note in regard to office equipment is being furnished pursuant to the undertaking given by me while being examined in relation to Subhead F2 (Incidental Expenses and Travelling of Officers and Staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas) on 9 March, 1978.

In 1975 the cost of providing and/or maintaining the following office equipment was met out of Subhead F2:—sound reinforcement systems in Dáil and Seanad Chambers; tape recording equipment in both Chambers and in Committee Rooms; paging equipment (i.e. “walkie-talkies” for Ushers); dictation and transcription equipment; electric typewriters; manual typewriters (for Parties).

In 1973 photocopying equipment was installed in Leinster House. Up to 31 December, 1975, rental and other charges in respect of this equipment were borne on the Vote for the Stationery Office. On 1 January, 1976, such charges were transferred to Subhead F2 of the Vote for the Houses of the Oireachtas.

The photocopying and paging equipment are rented. All other equipment is purchased. Equipment is retained until such time as professional advice is received that on economic grounds it should be replaced.

In regard to the saving of £6,000 approximately on Subhead F2, this in the main resulted from the fact that two accounts amounting to £4,500 approximately due in 1975 were not furnished until 1976.

M. J. HEALY,

Accounting Officer,

Houses of the Oireachtas.
