APPENDIX 6.DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION—FREE BOOKS SCHEMECléireach an Choiste, An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí Teach Laighean. A Chara, In the discussion of paragraph 36 of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General I said in reply to Deputy MacSharry, that at the time of the introduction of the “Free books scheme”, if my memory was right, in Kildare something like 80% of the people had medical cards. While my explanation of our decision not to use the medical card system was correct my memory played me false about the incidence in Kildare. I have since checked back on the figures supplied for 1967 and I find that the percentage of population covered by medical card in Co. Kildare was 39.9 Since the figure I gave from memory was patently wrong—and I am at a loss to understand how I could have put forward a figure of 80%—I write to give the correct figure. Mise, S. Ó CONCHOBHAIR, Accounting Officer, Department of Education. 13 Meitheamh, 1974. |
