APPENDIX 5.

SILTATION IN THE RIVER SHANNON

A Chara,

During my examination on 26th July, 1973, I was asked to furnish a note on the question of possible siltation in the Shannon below the entry into that river of the river Brosna on which an Arterial Drainage Scheme was carried out in 1948-55.

I have had the matter investigated and I am advised that there is no build up of silt evident in the area. Soundings which were taken showed water depths of more than 10 feet close to the banks. This would indicate that there is no cause for concern at the amount of siltation in the Shannon from the Brosna catchment.

There had been a build up of silt at the junction of the Grand Canal and the Brosna but that was removed in the course of recent maintenance operations on the Brosna.
