ANALYSIS OF ROAD-MAKING MATERIALS

During my examination by the Public Accounts Committee on 15th July 1971, I undertook to furnish a note on the service provided by the State Laboratory for the Department of Local Government for the analysis of road-making materials.

The service provided by the State Laboratory consisted of the analysis of tars and bitumens used in local authority road works. This particular work, which was small in volume, could have been done equally well by other bodies having analytical facilities similar to those of the State Laboratory e.g., the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards. No other similar work was, however, being done by another State-sponsored body.

It has been decided by the Minister for Local Government that the testing and analysis of road materials on the more extensive scale required in the future will be done by An Foras Forbartha, which is better equipped in this particular respect than the State Laboratory or the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards.
