A Chara,

During my examination before the Public Accounts Committee on 3rd November, I undertook to furnish, after consultation with the Accounting Officer of the Vote for Defence, information about the present status of claims submitted to the United Nations Organisation for the cost of maintaining the Irish army contingent participating in the UN Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The total claimed to-date by our Permanent Representative in New York, acting on behalf of the Department of Defence, is £3,232,681.01. These claims have been met to the extent of £2,680,611.75, leaving an outstanding balance of £552,069.26 still due to us. This sum relates exclusively to half-yearly claims submitted since the beginning of last year as the balance of claims submitted up to the end of 1970 were met by a final payment of £158,888.25 in July 1972.

Our Permanent Representative at the UN has regularly expressed to that Organisation the Government’s concern that our financial claims should be settled without delay. As however contributions by member States to finance the UN operation in Cyprus are voluntary, the extent to which claims can be met at any particular time depends on the flow of such voluntary contributions.
