Comment on evidence—Book No. 19, dated 3rd March 1971.

A chara,

Reference answer to question 9608 on page 727, I am quoted as replying “I made it quite clear he was going to fetch arms”. I believe the words I used were “I made it quite clear he was going to vet arms”.

Reference the use of the words “emotionally involved” in question 9573, page 726, my apprehension of the question did not extend to the word “emotionally”, which I would have queried if only for the reason, that the meaning of the word could be made to cover the whole gamut of feeling from a mild sympathy to unreasoning committment.

ANNEX B

24 June 1971

Cléireach an Choiste

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí

In the attached copy of Volume 27 of the Minutes of Evidence, relating to the meeting of the Committee held on 2 June 1971 I have indicated a number of amendments which, subject to the agreement of the Committee, I would like to see incorporated in the revised version.

A word of explanation may be necessary in regard to the suggested amendment to the reply to question 11697. My preceding comments on this particular aspect were related specifically to the question of destruction of documents between the hours of 7 p.m. and midnight—see in particular question 11681. Deputy FitzGerald’s question, No 11697, was on the other hand related in part to the destruction of documents by my own Department at any hour of the day in the year 1970. When the question was put to me I apparently did not spot this new element introduced into the question and that is why I replied “Yes, that is so”—thinking that my reply related to a question regarding the destruction of documents in my own and other Departments between the hours of 7 p.m. and midnight.

I am also suggesting an amendment in the reply to question 11686 to make this point clear, although it is already clear from my reply to question 11689.
