PROCEEDINGS OF THE COMMITTEE

1. The Committee met at 7 p.m.


2. Members Present.


The following members were present:—


Deputy Patrick Hogan (in the Chair), Deputies E. Collins, FitzGerald, H. Gibbons, Keating, MacSharry and Tunney.


3. Mr. E. F. Suttle (Comptroller and Auditor General) was in attendance in an advisory capacity.


4. The Department of Finance letter of 19 May 1971 in relation to secret semiofficial letter of 21 May 1970 from the Department of Justice to Department of Finance was considered.


Ordered: that the Secretary, Department of Finance be informed that before receipt of the secret letter, the Committee was unable to give an explicit undertaking in relation to the question of publishing it or referring to it in its Report.


5. Ordered: that restrictions on access to evidence taken in private, imposed by decision of 29 April 1971, be removed.


6. Mr. P. Devlin, M.P. who had agreed to give evidence today, not being in attendance, ordered that Press be informed that the Committee did not hold its scheduled public meeting as the witness did not attend.


7. Adjournment.


The Committee adjourned at 8.55 p.m. until 4.15 p.m. on Wednesday next.
