PROCEEDINGS OF THE COMMITTEE

1. The Committee met at 3.30 p.m.


2. Members Present.


The following members were present:— Deputy Patrick Hogan (in the Chair), Deputies Barrett, R. Burke, Cluskey, E. Collins, Dowling, FitzGerald, MacSharry, Nolan, Treacy and Tunney.


3. Mr. E. F. Suttle (Comptroller and Auditor General) was in attendance in an advisory capacity.


4. The Committee considered a letter* of 19 July from the Editor of the RTE “Seven Days” programme.


Motion made (Deputy Dowling):


“That the following statement be issued by the Committee to the Press and to RTE: ‘The Committee deplore the action of RTE in omitting from their recent “Seven Days” programme a statement on behalf of the Committee which RTE had requested and which had been recorded by the Chairman for inclusion in the programme.”’


Question put.

The Question was declared carried accordingly.


5. The Committee considered a letter* of 15 July from Captain James J. Kelly re cross-examination facilities.


Ordered: (i) that the sanction of the Minister for Finance be sought for the necessary expenditure to obtain legal advice relating to Captain Kelly’s letter; and (ii) that the Chairman seek an interview with the Minister in relation to the sanction and that the make representations to the Minister on the question of obtaining sanction for continuous legal advice for the Committee.


6. The Committee considered Deputy Ó Móráin letter† of 15 July 1971 in relation to Department of Justice files and approved form of letter** to Minister for Justice.


7. The Committee considered Colonel Hefferon’s letter†† of 19 July relating to an office in Monaghan.


Ordered: to write to the Department of Finance on the matter and to inform†† Colonel Hefferon that any additional evidence should be recorded on oath.
