APPENDIX XXXIX.

WARBLE FLY ERADICATION SCHEME: COMPENSATION.

A Chara,

I promised in my evidence before the Committee on 13th April, 1967, to furnish some further information about the arrangements for claiming compensation under the Warble Fly Eradication Scheme. The 24 hour period, within which a herdowner must have consulted his veterinary surgeon about the side effects observed in animals after treatment is regarded as quite reasonable. The drugs used are eliminated from the animal’s system within 6—8 hours of application and any side effects resulting from the treatment should be apparent well within that period. Early consultation with the veterinary surgeon is desirable, since prompt administration of the correct antidote normally leads to complete recovery. May I add that no claim has been rejected solely on the grounds that veterinary assistance was not procured within the 24 hour limit. It is not a condition of the scheme that a claim for compensation must be received within 24 hours of the treatment and no claim has been rejected on the grounds of late application.
