APPENDIX XXV.

P.O. STORES ACCOUNTS: STAFF.

An Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

During my examination by the Public Accounts Committee on the 2nd March, 1967, I undertook, in connection with a question about the suspense accounts mentioned in paragraphs 72 and 73 of the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General to give details of the grades of staff mainly concerned with the checking and apportionment of stores accounts. This work is, under the general direction of Executive and higher staff, performed by officers in the grades of Staff Officer, Clerical Officer and Clerk Typist. In the Stores Branch where accounts for purchases of stores are dealt with, the numbers in these grades have, in the interest of economy, been held at a very steady level despite the very great increase in the volume and value of stores purchased for this and other Departments, as the following figures show:

Because of recruitment difficulties, serving complements during the period in question were often below the nominal establishment for protracted periods. Furthermore, wastage through retirements, resignations and promotions was exceptionally heavy so that the proportion of experienced staff dropped sharply.
