APPENDIX XV.

GARDA SÍOCHÁNA: REPAYABLE ADVANCES TO OFFICERS AND INSPECTORS.

An Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí

During my examination before the Committee of Public Accounts on 21st October, 1965, in connection with the Appropriation Account for the Garda Síochána for 1963/64 I undertook to supply information in regard to sums advanced to Officers and Inspectors for the purchase of motor cars.

The position is as follows:—

Chief Superintendents, Superintendents and Inspectors of the Garda Síochána are obliged to provide themselves with cars for use on duty. To enable them to do so, interest-free advances are made on the following basis (less the selling price of the existing car):—

(1) New Cars:

£450 repayable in 4 years.

(2) Second-hand Cars:

(a) Chief Superintendents:

£250 repayable in 3 years.

(b) Superintendents and Inspectors:

£200 repayable in 3 years.

The amount included in the Estimates for 1963/64 for Repayable Advances to Officers and Inspectors was £12,485 and the amount estimated to come in by way of repayments of advances was £11,000. The actual expenditure on advances in the year was £15,752 and repayments totalled £12,502.
