GRANTS UNDER THE SCHOOL MEALS (GAELTACHT) ACTS

Arising out of my examination by the Committee on 22 Iúil, 1965, I wish to furnish the following information in regard to Subhead F.—Grants under the School Meals (Gaeltacht) Acts, 1930 and 1933 in connection with the Appropriation Account of the Vote for Social Assistance, 1963-64.

The Annual Grant of £10,000 is allocated between the County Councils of Cork, Donegal, Galway, Kerry and Mayo in the proportion of the average attendance at the schools in scheduled areas in each county to the aggregate average attendance at the schools in all scheduled areas. Recoupment of the authorities is limited to 50% of audited expenditure or the amount allocated, whichever is the lesser.

Payment in a year of account is made up of an advance on the basis of estimated expenditure in the year and adjusting payments on the basis of audited figures in respect of previous years.

The operation of the grant in respect of Galway and the other areas in the 1963-64 year of account is set out in the following table. The adjusting payments to Galway covered the years 1960-61 and 1961-62.
