APPENDIX VII.UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES—SAVING ON SUBHEAD B.Cléireach, An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí. When I was before your Committee in July, 1957, in connexion with the Appropriation Account for Universities and Colleges for 1955/56, I promised to furnish an explanation of the saving of £450 on Subhead B—University College, Dublin. Provision was made in the University College, Dublin Act, 1934, for an annual payment not exceeding £3,000 to recoup the College the cost of a certain staffing scheme for their Department of Modern Irish Language and Literature. As all the staff envisaged in this scheme were not appointed, the grant was never paid in full. The sum of £2,550 paid in 1955/56 is what was applied for by the College in an itemised claim. This explains the saving of £450 on the subhead. While most of the grants from this Vote, in particular those for general purposes, are paid in full, some are liable to abatement according to the extent of the expenditure incurred by the College concerned. These reducible grants include building grants, grants towards the cost of extension lectures and, of course, the grant of £3,000 per annum under review. (Signed) T. K. WHITAKER, Rúnaí, Roinn Airgeadais. 10 Lúnasa, 1957. |
