APPENDIX V.

COMMISSION ON PLACE NAMES.

Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

When I was before your Committee in July, 1957, I undertook to supply information about the progress of the work of the Commission on Place Names.

Appendix V to the Report of the Committee of Public Accounts, dated 20th June, 1956, outlines the history of the Commission on Place Names up to November, 1955. Following the transfer, late in 1955, of the departmental responsibility for the Commission to the Ordnance Survey Office it became obvious that it would be necessary to reorganise and strengthen the specialist staff of the Commission and determine revised working methods in the interests of the early publication of the results of Place Names research work already undertaken or about to be commenced. The recruitment of the new staff was not completed until May, 1957.

At present the training of the new staff and the work of examination and search mentioned in the terms of reference of the Commission (as quoted in the Appendix referred to above) is proceeding. Lists of Irish Place Names will, from time to time, be published by the Director of Ordnance Survey on the advice of the Commission. It is hoped that the first of such lists will be processed by the staff within a year.
