APPENDIX VIII.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE: “WET TIME” INSURANCE OF CIVILIAN EMPLOYEES.

Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

At the proceedings of the Committee of Public Accounts on the 25ú Márta, 1958, I undertook to furnish further information as to the classes of this Department’s civilian employees who are subject to “Wet Time” Insurance under the Insurance (Intermittent Unemployment) Act, 1942.

The only classes of the employees in question subject to “Wet Time” Insurance under the Act are:—

(1) Building tradesmen (including painters and building labourers) and

(2) Road workers when employed on road repairs.

The workers at (2) were brought within the scope of the Act in 1955.

Under Section 5 of the Act the Minister for Social Welfare may, subject to his being satisfied in regard to certain matters, grant exemption from the Act in respect of any class of persons governed by it. Shortly after the passing of the Act an tAire Cosanta made application for exemption in respect of the classes of workers at (1) but this was refused. No further application for exemption has been made or is contemplated.
