APPENDIX IX.

PREPARATORY COLLEGE, BALLYVOURNEY—ERECTION.

Cléireach,

An Choiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

During my examination before the Committee of Public Accounts on 17th April, 1958, and arising out of the discussion on paragraph 17 of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General, I was asked if the damp proof course in the building of the Preparatory College at Ballyvourney had been properly laid. I have confirmed that there was no evidence of rising damp in the walls and that there is no reason to suppose that the damp proof course was not properly laid.

I was also requested to furnish a note on the question of the supervision of the work, which I had indicated was exceptional. I now confirm that the work received unremitting attention from the outset and not specially from the time the building was roofed. A Clerk of Works was employed wholetime on the site and submitted reports weekly to headquarters. In addition, inspections were made by the local Architect for the district, whose headquarters were at Killarney, at intervals of from seven to ten days and on a number of occasions he visited the site twice a week. There were, moreover, frequent inspections by the Deputy Principal Architect from headquarters.
