APPENDIX IV.

COMMISSION ON PLACE NAMES.

Cléireach,

An Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí.

When I was before your Committee in March, 1958, I undertook to supply a note about the progress of the work of the Commission on Place Names since last year.

You will recall that my last note gave the position as at 1st November, 1957. Since then, training of the new specialist staff has been completed and the work of examination and research is proceeding. The Place Names Section is concentrating at present on the issue of a booklet containing the names of “post” towns.

In November last the officer who was responsible for the day-to-day work of the Place Names Section and who was also the chief technical expert on the staff of the Commission resigned his position. The consequential vacancy was filled on a trial basis on the 1st January last. This, together with the prolonged illness of one of the specialist field staff, has retarded the work.

An Roinn Airgeadais.
