EXPLANATION OF A CREDIT IN RESPECT OF TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION SERVICES.

At the proceedings of the Public Accounts Committee on 24th November, 1955, I undertook to furnish a note explaining a credit of £1,995 in respect of telegraph construction services.

Construction works often involve the displacement of existing plant, the value of which must be credited to the job. The extent of the displacement varies considerably from job to job, and cannot always be estimated accurately in advance. In the financial year 1953-54 the value at current prices of telegraph plant recovered proved to be greater by £1,995 than the total expenditure on the construction works completed.
