APPENDIX XXI.STOCKS CARRIED BY THE CORK DISTRICT ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOPS.Rúnaí, Coiste um Chuntais Phoiblí. 1. In the course of my examination before the Public Accounts Committee on 17th July, 1952, I undertook to supply information as to the quantity of stocks carried in the Cork District Architectural Workshops in each of the last seven or eight years. The stocks carried fall into two categories: (a) Consumable stores to meet day-to-day requirements and (b) Salvaged materials. The stores records in respect of both categories are kept on a numerical basis. 2. Consumable stores comprise such items as screws, nails, hinges, locks, electric bulbs, charges for fire extinguishers, small quantities of bricks, sand, gravel, lime and scantlings and boards of various sizes. The quantities carried represent the minimum necessary to meet day-to-day requirements, and they do not vary appreciably from year to year. It is laid down that their total value shall not at any time exceed £200. An examination of the stocks was made on 5th September, 1952 to ascertain their current value. The value of the 80 separate items was calculated to be approximately £130. 3. Salvaged materials consist of a miscellaneous collection of items, for the most part individually of little value, recovered during maintenance and adaptation works on the various buildings serviced by the workshops, e.g., old doors, partition sections, notice cases, notice boards, roller blinds, cabinet and counter-drawers, window sashes, etc.; they also include worn-out or damaged items of furniture and equipment such as chairs, wash-hand cabinets, waste paper baskets, hat and coat racks, some disused couches and trestles originally provided for the Air Raid Precautions Service, old ranges, gutters, etc. Some of the material is capable of re-use, but a considerable quantity is of scrap value only, and is held for disposal. As there has been no disposal sale in recent years, and as only odd items have been re-used, the stock has been accumulating. The examination of these materials on 5th September, 1952, disclosed that their value was approximately £125. Arrangements are being made to dispose of such items as are not susceptible of future use. 4. During the Emergency, in addition to the above, certain reserve stocks of the value of £200 approximately, of timber, nails and screws, hinges, etc. (based on one year’s requirements) were purchased and separately stored. These stocks were converted to current use in 1946. (Sínithe) DIARMUID Ó hEIGCEARTUIGH, Chairman, Commissioners of Public Works. 31ú Deireadh Fómhair, 1952. |
