APPENDIX XIV.

SALE OF TURF CAMPS AND EQUIPMENT—KILDARE EMERGENCY TURF SCHEME.

The camps disposed of to Bord na Móna were constructed at a cost of £160,706. During their occupation by Bord na Móna a further sum of £14,994 was expended on extensions and reconstruction work. After agreement between the Departments concerned and Bord na Móna and with the sanction of the Minister for Finance the camps were handed over to Bord na Móna for a sum of £21,887.

The camps were constructed in 1941/42 on the basis of a short life of from three to five years; consequently, when purchased by Bord na Móna in July, 1949, the buildings, etc., had deteriorated very considerably and the price paid was regarded as fair and reasonable.

The original cost of equipment and materials in 1942 was estimated at £50,000. Most of the items were of an expendable nature such as light rail tracks, sleepers, timber, barrows, buckets, spades, piping, tools, etc., and equipment for kitchens, dining rooms and sleeping quarters. At the end of the scheme in 1948, Bord na Móna took over at cost price to a total value of £6,346, certain items of equipment, etc., which they could use in their machine turf production operations. The materials and equipment remaining for disposal were not of much value and were sold to Bord na Móna at an agreed figure of £4,000. The two amounts, totalling £10,346 were included in the sum of £79,034 4s. 9d. surrendered by Bord na Móna at the close of the Kildare Emergency Scheme and brought to account in 1950/51 as Exchequer Extra Receipts (Miscellaneous).
