COST OF CUSTOMS AT BORDER AND PORTS.

With reference to my examination at the meeting of the Public Accounts Committee on the 17th ultimo, I annex, as requested, a statement relative to the matters raised by Deputy Davin.

The proceeds of Customs Sales (Seizures, etc.), brought to account as Appropriations in Aid amounted to £13,803 7s. 1d. The segregation of this amount as between seizures at the Land Frontier and seizures at the Ports (including Airports and Foreign Parcel Post Depots) was approximately as follows:

The cost of supervising cross-Border activities from a Customs point of view and the cost of supervising the Ports are approximately as follows:—

These are comprehensive figures and include, in addition to the salaries and wages of the officers actually employed on Customs work at the Land Frontier and Ports, the cost of Head Office Administration, Travelling expenses, Telephones, Uniforms, Motor Cars for Frontier Patrols, etc., and estimated amounts for services rendered by and borne on the Votes of other Departments (Posts and Telegraphs, etc.). In arriving at these figures credit has been taken for moneys received from Merchants, etc., for special attendance of officers, fines, forfeitures, law costs recovered, etc., and proceeds of Customs sales (Seizures, etc.).


The cost of the Officers actually employed on Customs work at the Border and at the Ports was approximately as follows:—
