3. STATEMENTS BY MINISTER FOR AGRICULTURE RELATING TO DEPUTY CORRY:

The Ceann Comhairle stated that during the debate on the Second Stage of the Agriculture (Amendment) Bill, 1948, on the 14th December, certain statements were made by the Minister for Agriculture which implied a reflection on the probity of Deputy Corry in connection with the acquisition by him of lime from the Tuam Beet Sugar Factory, and that on the following day when the Deputy had made A personal explanation on the matter in the House the Minister did not withdraw the statements. The Chair accordingly had thought fit to refer the matter to the Committee for investigation as the personal honour of a Member of the House seemed to be impugned.

The Committee deliberated.

Motion made—Deputy Halliden:

“That no further action be taken by the Committee in the matter.”

Amendment proposed—Deputy Killilea:

“To delete all words after the word ‘That,’ and substitute the words ‘it be recommended to the House that a Judicial Tribunal be set up to investigate the matter.”
