Committee Reports::Interim and Final Report - Appropriation Accounts 1942 - 1943::26 April, 1945::Appendix

APPENDIX V.

POST OFFICE FACTORY FIRE. HENRY STREET SHOPS. PROTECTION OF MAILS. “QUESTION TIME” PAYMENTS.

Smoking was strictly forbidden in the Post Office Factory and notices to that effect were prominently displayed throughout the buildings and Depots.

All the shops on Departmental property in Henry Street and those available in the Arcade were leased some years ago. The remainder of the Arcade premises are required for official purposes—some of them temporarily to house stores displaced as a result of the Factory fire.

The rents for all leased premises are received by the Post Office and brought to account under Subhead T. (Appropriations-in-Aid). The Minister for Posts and Telegraphs is the lessor in all cases, after consultation with the Office of Public Works.

Mail Car Contractors are bound to provide cover against the weather for mails.

Enquiry has been made in the Kilkenny case and it is stated that on the only service on which an open van is used a tarpaulin cover is provided. The occasion on which the van was seen without a cover is believed to have been exceptional.

Radio Eireann pays £10 to the local organisers and supplies the questions. The local organisers make their own arrangements regarding compere, etc., etc., and provide the prizes.
