APPENDIX XX.

LANDS—SURETIES FOR CONTRACTS.

With reference to the proceedings of the Public Accounts Committee on 25th ultimo in connection with paragraph 44 of the Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Appropriation Accounts for 1939/40, I desire to state that of the 12 cases in which there is a question of proceedings for default against contractors, sureties were provided in 5 cases.

With regard to the matter of the sum retained pending the completion of the contract in a satisfactory manner, the Land Commission practice is to retail 12½ per cent. in the case of contracts up to £400, and 10 per cent. in the case of larger contracts.
