APPENDIX XVII.

INVESTIGATION OF BALLYLYNAN COAL DEPOSITS.

In the course of my examination by the Committee of Public Accounts I promised to furnish information as to the results of the investigation into the coal deposits near Ballylynan.

Three boreholes were sunk on the area—the first to a depth of 450 ft., the second to a depth of 293 ft., and the third to a depth of 426 ft. No coal was found in the first borehole. In the second borehole a seam of 13½ inches thick was traversed and in the third borehole a seam 6 inches thick was got. One of these latter seams was obviously unworkable and the other seam, judged by normal standards, would be deemed unworkable. The result of the boring was, therefore, negative.
