PROCEEDINGS OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE.

Thursday, 20th June, 1929.

1. The Joint Committee met at 11 a.m.


2. Present: Senator Hooper (in the Chair); Deputies T. Hennessy, Lemass, T. J. O’Connell, O’Mahony, Smith and Thrift; Senators Mrs. Costello, Johnson, The McGillycuddy of the Reeks, Milroy, Col. Moore and O’Hanlon.


3. Allowances to Members of Dail and of the Seanad.


The Assistant Clerk of the Seanad attended the Joint Committee in response to their request for information as to the recording of the attendances of Members of the Seanad.


Motion made (Deputy Thrift):


“That the Committee is not satisfied as to the feasibility of any scheme involving diminution of allowances on account of the non-attendance of Members, but thinks that the question of each House establishing a procedure for dealing with special cases of protracted absence should be considered; that the Committee recommend that such procedure should involve the summoning to attend of the Member, failure to comply with this, without adequate explanation, being followed by withdrawal of allowance, either in whole or in part.”


Consideration of the motion post poned.


4. Travelling Facilities.


The Clerk of the Dáil attended the Joint Committee in response to their request for information on matters relating to travelling facilities.


5. The Joint Committee adjourned at 1.10 p.m. until Wednesday next at 11 a.m.
