IMEACHTA AN CHO-CHOISTE.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE JOINT COMMITTEE.

Dé Máirt, 3adh Abrán, 1928.

Tuesday, 3rd April, 1928.

1. The Joint Committee met at 3 p.m.


2. Present: The Ceann Comhairle (in the Chair), the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad; Deputies de Valera and Tierney; Senators Bennett, Douglas, Jameson, O’Farrell and O’Hanlon.


3. Panel of Candidates.


Motion made (Deputy de Valera):


“That the Joint Committee recommends that for the purposes of elections to the Seanad a panel of candidates be formed by the Dáil and Seanad, in proportions to be decided later.”


Question put; the Joint Committee divided; For, 2; Against, 6.


For: Deputies de Valera and Tierney.


Against: Cathaoirleach of the Seanad; Senators Bennett, Douglas, Jameson, O’Farrell and O’Hanlon.


The motion was declared negatived accordingly.


Another motion made (Cathaoirleach of the Seanad):


“That the Joint Committee recommends that for the purpose of elections to the Seanad a panel of candidates be formed by a Nominating College created for that purpose, subject to the right of the Dáil and Seanad to add nominations to the panel not exceeding a fixed maximum.”


Question put; the Joint Committee divided; For, 5 Against, 3.


For: Cathaoirleach of the Seanad; Senators Bennett, Douglas, Jameson and O’Farrell.


Against: Deputies de Valera and Tierney; Senator O’Hanlon.


The motion was declared carried accordingly.


4. The Joint Committee adjourned at 5.15 p.m. till 11 a.m. Wednesday, 18th April.
