I am directed by the Chairman, Mr Denis Foley T.D. to refer to your recent appearance before the Committee of Public Accounts.


During that meeting the Committee requested the following additional information which was not available to you at the time:-


1.The average retail price of beef per kilo in both Ireland and Italy.


2.The amount received in promotional expenses from An Bord Bia by each group in receipt of such expenses.


3.The number of companies included in the write-off of £650,000 in respect of the Voluntary Meat Promotion Levy in 1996, the highest amount written off and which company this amount was in respect of.


The Committee would be grateful if this information could be provided before 22 May 1997.

1Retail Beef Prices:


Irish and Italian retail beef prices are shown in Appendix Table No. 1 and 2 respectively. Irish prices are published in the Statistical Bulletin by the C.S.O.


2Promotional Support 1995:


Details of amounts charged in the 1995 accounts of Bord Bia are attached in Appendix Table No. 3.


3Voluntary Meat Promotion Levy:


The total number of meat plants covered by the write-off was 27 which were owned by 11 companies. The highest amount written off was £251,196.11 which was in respect of 12 plants belonging to AIBP Limited.
