1. The Committee met at 10.40 a.m.

The following Members were present:-


Deputy Séamus Pattison (in the Chair), the Minister for Social Welfare, Deputies Theresa Ahearn, Paul Bradford, Peadar Clohessy*, Paul Connaughton*, John Connor*, Joe Costello, Michael Creed*, Frances Fitzgerald, Mary Flaherty, Chris Flood, Denis Foley*, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Jim Kemmy, Seán Kenny, Michéal Martin, Dinny McGinley, Tom Moffat, Ned O’Keeffe*, Michael Smith*, Mary Wallace*, Joe Walsh and Michael J. Woods.

Ordered: That the Committee now sit in private.


The Committee sat in private accordingly.


The Committee went out of private session.


4. Meeting Suspended.


Ordered: That the Meeting be now suspended until 11.40 a.m.


The Meeting was accordingly suspended at 11.20 a.m.


The Meeting was resumed at 11.40 a.m.


5. Social Welfare Bill, 1996


The Committee took the Bill into consideration.


(i) Section 1 agreed to.


(ii) Section 2.


Amendment proposed (Deputy Joe Walsh):


“In page 5, line 19, after ‘1993’ to insert ‘and “qualified persons” shall be substituted for any references therein to “adult dependant”’.”


Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.


Section agreed to.


Further consideration of the Bill adjourned.


6. Meeting Suspended.

The Meeting was accordingly suspended at 1 p.m.

7. Consideration of Bill.


The Committee resumed consideration of the Bill.
