Committee Reports::Final Report - Appropriation Accounts 1988::31 October, 1990::Appendix

APPENDIX 10

31 Deire Fomhair, 1990,

Chairman,

Committee of Public Accounts,

Dáil Éireann,

Dublin 2.

At its meeting of 25 October, 1990 the Committee raised matters concerning the expenses of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission.

The present Commission was appointed for a five year term ending on 30 March, 1991 and has seven members. Members do not receive remuneration. Expenditure of £1,372 in 1988, under Subhead A.3 Commissions and Special Enquiries, relates to the travel and subsistence expenses and expenses relating to the meetings of the Commission. Accommodation for the meetings is provided by RTE. The Commission also has a Secretary who is an Executive Officer from the Department of Finance, who carries out the duties on a part-time basis as required. It is not possible to quantify the amount of time the Officer spends on Commission work.

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission makes an annual report of its activities to the Minister and copies of the Report are laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas. I enclose 12 copies of the annual report of the Commission for the period 31 March, 1988 to 30 March, 1989 for the information of the Committee. It will be seen that the Commission met on four occassions and processed six complaints in the 12 months covered by the Report.

Mise, le meas,

B. McDONAGH,

Secretary,

Department of Communications.
