APPENDIX 11

CHIEF STATE SOLICITOR’S OFFICE

1984 Appropriation Accounts

The Clerk of the Committe,

Committee of Public Accounts,

Leinster House,

Dublin 2.

Dear Sir,

I refer to the proceedings today of the Committee of Public Accounts, at which I gave evidence concerning the Vote of the Office of the Attorney General, and, in particular, to the consideration by the Committee of the irregularities in the petty cash of the Chief State Solicitor’s Office.

In the course of my evidence I stated, in answer to a question, that the amount of money which had been ascertained to have been fraudulently obtained (as distinct from the possible total sum involved) was approximately £1,100. On returning to this Office and examining the file I find that that statement (for which I had relied on my memory) was incorrect; the amount is approximately £1,770.

I very much regret this error and extend to the Committee my apologies for any inconvenience which it may cause.

Yours faithfully,

MATTHEW RUSSELL

Accounting Officer
