APPENDIX 1 GAS ACT 1976

SUMMARY OF MAIN PROVISIONS

-develop and maintain an economical and efficient gas supply system, requisite for the time being

-have regard to the gas supplies which are available to it

-have regard to the safety of gas transmission and distribution

-be offered all gas found in the State, save that needed for an industry sponsored by Minister for Industry and Commerce

-cover its costs and make a reasonable return on capital.

-buy, transmit and distribute gas, and set charges for gas

-build pipes and export gas, subject to the Minister’s permission/conditions

-borrow up to a limit of £80m. for capital purposes and moreover borrow to cover current expenditure

-enter onto land to build pipelines (under certain conditions) and compulsorily acquire land and wayleaves

-build and operate pipelines to supply gas to the Board

-advise others on the use of gas

-propose safety Bye-laws.
