Committee Reports::Report - Proposal to Establish a Centralised State Agency for Persons Registering for Employment or Training::31 May, 1984::Appendix

APPENDIX 10

LETTER TO THE CLERK TO THE COMMITTEE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE

Further to your request for a summary of expenditure on services related to employment/training, I am to advise you that the total cost of salaries, wages and allowances for staff at employment exchanges and employment offices as well as for staff at the Headquarters Branch which deals directly with the administration of the unemployment benefit and unemployment assistance schemes was £11.79m in 1983 and is estimated at £13.8m for 1984.

It is not possible to furnish a separate figure in respect of the cost of staff in other areas of the Department whose work includes provision of a service to the employment exchanges because costs are not apportioned in this way between the different services. Similarly, there is no breakdown available at present of the other administration costs (such as stationery, office machinery, postage and telephones) in relation to the employment exchanges/ offices. There is no money provided in the Department’s Vote for expenditure on capital projects.
