APPENDIX 5COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR P.M.G.’S OFFICE10 Meitheamh, 1981 Cleireach An Coiste um Chuntais Phoibli Teach Laighean Baile Átha Cliath 2. A Chara During the course of my evidence before the Committee on 12 March, 1981, I undertook to let you have certain information on the provision of computer equipment for the new bank reconciliation system being installed in the Paymaster General’s Office. The position is as follows. The equipment required for the revised reconciliation system consists of: (a) A terminal affording direct access to the main computer (b) Appropriate data preparation equipment (c) Two visual display units with keyboards and essential control equipment. The equpment will be linked by leased telephone lines to an I.B.M. computer controlled by the Department of the Public Service (Central Data Processing Services). All equipment will be rented. Renting is preferable to purchasing because it allows for flexibility which is important in view of the present rapid technological developments. Items (a) and (b) above will be rented for a five year period; item (c) will be rented for a two year period because of the more rapid changes in that field. Due to space limitations, it was not intended to instal any of the above mentioned items in the premises occupied by the Paymaster General’s Office at Agriculture House, Kildare Street, Dublin. However, because of the delays encountered in securing suitable alternative accommodation, it was decided that it would be preferable to instal part of the data preparation equipment in Agriculture House rather than postpone further the implementation of the revised reconciliation system. Some data preparation equipment was accordingly installed in Agriculture House in May, 1980 and the revised system implemented on a restricted basis with effect from November, 1980. The staff of the Paymaster General’s Office has recently been transferred to new premises at Earlcourt, Adelaide Road, Dublin — and the full range of computer equipment required to operate the new reconciliation system is currently being installed there. No rent will be payable on the equipment until the installation work is completed satisfactorily. Mise le meas TOMÁS F. Ó COFAIGH Oifigeach Cuntasaiochta, An Roinn Airgeadais. |
