BROADCASTING IN IRELAND

CHRONOLOGY

1923

—White Paper proposed commercial radio service; rejected by Oireachtas.

1926

—Wireless Telegraphy Act provided for the establishment and maintenance of State broadcasting stations. 2RN opens on January 1.

1927

—Cork station opened (closed 1930-58).

1928

—Dublin station moved to G.P.O.

1933

—Athlone transmitter opened.

1939

—Plans for short-wave station (abandoned 1951).

1953

—Five-man council appointed to be responsible to Minister for control and supervision of the broadcasting service.

1960

—Broadcasting Authority Act passed. Radio Éireann Authority established.

1961

—RTE television launched on December 31.

1962

—Television Centre at Donnybrook opened.

1966

—VHF transmitters for radio service commissioned. Name changed to Radio Telefís Éireann.

1968

—Day-long radio service (07.30-23.45 hours) launched.

1971/76

—Colour television introduced.

1972

—Radio Centre at Donnybrook opened. Raidió na Gaeltachta service inaugurated.

1973

—Raidió na Gaeltachta service transmitted nationwide on VHF.

1974

—Broadcasting Review Committee reported.

1976

—Broadcasting Authority (Amendment) Act passed.

1978

—RTE 2 television inaugurated (November 2)

1979

—RTE Radio 2 inaugurated (May 31).
