State investment in Arramara Teoranta (formerly Alginate Industries (Ireland) Ltd.) was authorised in an exceptional manner some thirty years ago by the Alginate Industries (Ireland) Limited (Acquisition of Shares) Act, 1949 (No. 22 of 1949), before other industrial promotion schemes were introduced. (An amending Act was passed in 1954-No. 29). In more recent times Arramara has received grants in the normal way from the Industrial Development Authority.

Both of Arramara’s factories are in Gaeltacht areas and this Department and Gaeltarra Éireann, a statutory body under its auspices, are particularly interested in the provision of employment in those areas. It may be mentioned that a higher level of employment than in Arramara has been attained by several of Gaeltarra’s subsidiary and associate companies.
